South Korea: Women mobilized !

The 26th Korean Women's Festival and World March of Women Action for celebrating the International Women's Day occurred on March 6th 2010.

Around 500 women participated from the Korean Women's Association United, its member organizations, other non-governmental organizations, and activists, families, students, etc. They chose 3 different colors which represented 3 issues ̶ Purple represented the local election, yellow represented the women's rights and red represented the campaign "Co-existence of social work with care work; socialization of care work".

The activities took place in Seoul Metropolitan City, at the Ewha Womans University and the Changcheon cultural park and the surrounding neighborhood

The objectives of the action were:
‒ To change society for the share of responsibilities of care work
‒ To strengthen and defend the women's rights
‒ To increase the voter turnout for local election in June, 2010

The political platform of demands for the WMW in South Korea:
‒ We demanded to eradication of discriminatory practices of firing women due to pregnancy and the responsibilities that occur with child bearing and rearing
‒ We demanded to guaranteed women worker’s rights to be equal that men have
‒  We demanded to expansion of public daycare centers by three times the current levels, while establishing after school programs in every school
‒ We demanded to creation of a guaranteed paid holiday for couples upon the birth of a child
‒ We demanded to protection of men's care work rights
‒ We demanded to better working conditions which make the coexistence of paid work and domestic child care
‒ We demanded to the protection of women and children from public predatorial environments to create a healthy public environment and amending the laws that deal with punishing the assailants
‒ We demanded to the public job training for women who are at a social disadvantage in order to work to eliminate poverty
