United States: Seattle International Women’s Day

March focuses on poverty, militarization, and violence against women and children

United States: Seattle International Women’s Day

call for action!

This year, activists working for women’s rights in Seattle will join a global movement as they celebrate International Women’s Day 2010 as part of the World March of Women. In solidarity with women around the world, a broad coalition of local progressive and feminist groups has planned a march and rally on Saturday, March 6 and a community celebration on the evening of Monday, March 8.

Organizers invite all who are concerned with protecting human rights and promoting justice and peace to gather at noon at Powell Barnett Park (Martin Luther King Way and Alder St.) and proceed down Jackson St. to a rally in Pioneer Square’s Occidental Park. On the way, they will stop at a number of sites that highlight Seattle’s direct connection to the issues at the heart of the World March of Women’s international protests—ending poverty, stopping violence against women and children, and opposing war and the continued militarization of society.

The 2 pm rally at Occidental Park will feature thought-provoking entertainment and dynamic local social activists speaking on issues such as reproductive justice, immigrant rights, and the ways women can work together locally, nationally, and internationally.

On Monday, March 8, the celebration will continue at a community gathering from 7 to 9 pm at POCAAN, 1509 19th Ave. near Madison St. In a relaxed atmosphere, with refreshments and entertainment by local performers, organizers will honor the contributions of local activist women who have worked on social justice issues here in Seattle.
