Women and People’s Summit of the Americas against Militarization

In the WMW's America's Regional Meeting last year we discussed the organisation of a regional initiative as part of the 3rd International Action.

As a result of this debate and of decisions made in Galicia, in Cochabamba we decided to, “Join together with the ‘Women’s Social Movement against War and for Peace’ initiative in Colombia; they are planning a women’s meeting in August 2010 in Colombia. We are continuing our dialogue with them so that we can explore the possibility of being co-organisers of this event, an event which will involve women throughout the Americas and the Caribbean”.

The idea of this Meeting, “Women and People’s Summit of the Americas against Militarisation”, is to move forward in the construction of an agenda for peace that goes beyond Colombia’s borders, in the recognition of the current political moment in which this country is used to counter all initiatives for change that are taking place on the continent.

The summit will take place between the 16th and 23rd August 2010, comprised of three principal moments:

•  Firstly, a Humanitarian Action (17th – 20th August) in which international observers will visit 5 regions in conflict where women victims will share the impacts of this conflict on their lives and bodies.

• Secondly, the Meeting itself (21st – 22nd August) in which women from Colombia and diverse countries – on the 1st day – and in dialogue with other social movements – on the 2nd day – will debate key issues.

• Thirdly, the closing mobilization (23rd August) of the event, with a public action: a vigil that will make women’s struggles more visible and denounce militarisation and military bases.

We call all people to the Women and People’s Summit of the Americas against militarization, from August 16th to August 23, 2010, in Colombia.
